Start With Your Material Hardness to Set a Baseline Wire Diameter
For most hard rock mining applications, starting with 65Mn manganese steel wire at 4–8mm diameter gives you a solid wear resistance foundation, with tensile strength high enough to handle constant heavy ore impact without early fatigue cracks. Lock in the Compromise With Weld Quality Checks
Even the perfect wire diameter and open area ratio falls apart if your spot welds are weak. Make sure every weld point hits at least 80% of the base metal’s tensile strength, so wires don’t shift under heavy load and warp your carefully calibrated apertures. This small quality check prevents uneven wear that would force you to replace the screen far earlier than planned.
