Quenching involves heating the 65Mn metal wire to above its critical temperature and then rapidly cooling it, causing the steel's interior to transform into martensite, increasing the hardness of the 65Mn metal screen. The optimal quenching temperature is between 790℃ and 820℃. Lower temperatures will not achieve the desired hardness, while higher temperatures will result in a complete loss of screen toughness. The holding time should be calculated at 1 minute per millimeter of workpiece thickness, not a fixed amount.

The Tempering Process Must Preserve the Screen's Toughness

After quenching, the internal stress of the 65Mn metal wire screen is enormous, making it prone to breakage with a slight bend. Tempering is used to reheat the screen to a certain temperature and then cool it, releasing internal stress and balancing hardness and toughness. The most commonly used tempering temperature for 65Mn metal screens is between 300℃ and 450℃. Lower temperatures result in higher hardness but lower toughness, while higher temperatures improve toughness but decrease hardness. For heavy-duty screening processes, it is recommended to control the temperature between 350℃ and 400℃, which provides impact resistance without easily breaking. The tempering time should be controlled between 1 and 2 hours; too short or too long a time will not achieve the desired effect.

Many factories, in order to meet deadlines, skip tempering after quenching or simply bake it briefly. Such screens may work initially, but they will start to break and deform after a few days. Truly good 65M metal screens require repeated adjustments to every parameter, and the process curve is fine-tuned according to different batches of raw materials. After tempering, air cooling is sufficient.
