Comprehensive Guide to the Installation and Maintenance of Tensioned Polyurethane Screens: Preventing Premature Wear

Most mine operators learn this the hard way: the lifespan of a tensioned polyurethane screen can be 3-5 times that of a steel screen, or it might fail in just a few weeks. What's the difference? It's not the screen itself, but the installation and maintenance.

Tension is Key in Tensioned Polyurethane Screens

Screens rely on uniform tension across the entire panel to maintain the integrity of the screen openings. Uneven tensioning creates localized stress points, leading to premature wear. Using a hydraulic or mechanical tensioning device, i.e., a tensioned polyurethane screen, ensures a tension of at least 15-20 kN/m across the screen width. Check weekly for the first month, then monthly thereafter. Sounds tedious? But it's far better than the significant costs of frequently replacing screen panels.

Polyurethane Tension Screens

Easily Overlooked Installation Mistakes

Many people simply bolt the screen frame directly to the screen box without using vibration dampers. This will transmit all vibrations directly to the polyurethane, leading to fatigue cracking. Rubber vibration isolators or spring dampers should be used between the frame and the support structure to prevent fatigue cracking of the screen due to excessive pressure.

Specifications and Parameters for Relevant Applications

The following are the main specifications for tensioned polyurethane screens in relevant applications: Hardness is generally 85A – 95A Shore A; Tensile strength ≥ 25 MPa; Aperture is between 0.1mm – 50mm, customizable; Panel sizes are mainly 305×610mm and 305×915mm; Operating temperature is -40°C to 80°C; Service life is 3-5 times that of steel.

Efficient Maintenance Extends the Service Life of Tensioned Polyurethane Screens

The screen does not require daily cleaning. A quick inspection before each shift is sufficient to ensure the screen is free of sagging, uneven wear, or minor tears. Tensioned polyurethane screens feature a modular design, meaning that only the damaged panel needs to be replaced when it breaks, eliminating the need to disassemble the entire panel and significantly reducing maintenance costs. This is a major advantage of tensioned polyurethane screens.

In short, tensioned polyurethane screens are very robust and durable. However, "robust and durable" does not mean "no maintenance after installation." To extend its service life, it is necessary to adjust the tension and isolation frame, and verify the specifications according to the actual feeding conditions. Only in this way can the service life be truly extended.
